about

Yaman SalahiHello! This is my website. I am an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley in the Rhetoric Department concentrating in public discourse, and I primarily use this platform to post a mix of news, commentary, and links to things I stumble upon online.

Most of my posts revolve around how people talk about Israel and Palestine (but also Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and other countries that orbit the axis of evil) as well as how Arabs and Muslims are discussed in the media. While the topic matter seems very specific, I think a lot of important insights can be extrapolated to examine more general phenomena.

Besides these seemingly far-off issues (but not), I also post occasionally on student activism at UC Berkeley. In particular, I enjoy poking fun at the way student political activities are covered in publications like the Daily Californian, as well as looking critically at more serious issues like the student body’s relationship with organs like the University administration, the UC Regents, and the ASUC (student government).

At Cal, I have been involved primarily with two organizations: Students for Justice in Palestine and Cal Students for Equal Rights and a Valid Education (CalSERVE). For a brief period of time, I was also an editor of the a-Rab magazine, which is currently in the middle of an indefinite slumber.

Some programming related projects I work or have worked on include Aktub, an Arabic typing tutor, and What’s Up Berkeley, a new student-run news publication that is still in early stages of development.
