The twist in this article is that the mayor is Muslim, which does not follow from what was written. Rather he appears to be a Dutchman who happens to have been born from a Muslim background. As a result, it does not mean anything if he invites a gay pride march through the suburb – what is worrying is that people who reject homosexual behaviour are being forced to ‘accept’ it by officialdom, which should just leave each to their own sphere.

Immigrants need to respect their host country and freedom of speech, expression and living without fear.
Gay people are being harassed by muslim Youth all over the country and its the mayor’s job to educate and spread tolerance.
No one should living in fear, fear creates angry self distructive individuals who are useless to themselves and their communities. Ex. The young angry palestinians who would rather blow themselves up rather than hope for a better future. You take hope and security from a human being and then you begin to see their dark side.

I support gay people because they never ever bothered me and to hear about the bashings that take place in a country like Netherlands is embaressing to me as a Muslim and Arab woman, not only do we have to deal with stereotypes of young arab gangs stealing, dealing hard drugs and sexually harrasing people but now hate crimes.

Some immigrants forget how hard life is in their homelands and take their host countries for granted.

Rawabi, itself, is not problematic. Rather the growing, fanciful discourse that it fits into, a discourse that emphasises development before independence, is the greater cause for alarm. @snickerdoodls Surely one should be concerned about possible reactions, but if it is a matter of self-censorship, it's unjustifiable.
